When is it too old to get a job in IB? (in reality, even though age discrimination laws are in place)

It very much depends on your background and the question is probably not whether you could but whether you’d want to. I have seen some people join the industry at Director even Managing Director Level having had practically a full time career in another industry e.g. Law, Management Consulting but they tend to come into specific roles based on their prior experience which gives them some relevant expertise. There are plenty of MBAs who have joined in their late 20s early 30s. Assuming you have to come in as an associate (i.e. MBA graduate equivalent), then I would personally say that your late 30s is probably leaving it as late as you would want to go. It is tough to start from scratch at that stage in your life particularly as I-banks are typically pretty young organisations in terms of personnel – there is a reason for that – the industry takes a lot out of you.
