Do you take into consideration the name of a university a student will graduate from when offering a job?

I am currently studying at Middlesex Uni, London pursuing BSc Business Economics. I am interested in working in the Financial Services Industry after my first degree. I dont know what are the chances of me getting a job in a high calibre Investment Bank or a top business company. Can you advise me? Also, i will be studying in my second year in the US at Baylor University, Texas studying Business Economics but will finish my degree at Middlesex. How will this effect my job application if i end up with a 2:1? Asked by umarski8791, 41 days ago

I dont take it into account at all when offering the job. but I do when interviewing. Basically if you go to a thrid tier Uni it's because you have screwed up your a-Levels. You may be able to counteract that by stellar grades or a masters degree but why would I interview yuou when I could speak to someone who has done well one both of the two data points as opposed to you who has screwed one of them up?

Middlesex is not a "target school" for many employers, but that does not stop you getting a job. Grade of degree matters of course. You need to work a bit harder/ to get a job, but there is no particular need to panic.

I know Baylor university... whilst its reputation isn't as good as other universities in Texas like Rice or Texas A&M, I would say that it has got a better name in the US than Middlesex does in UK (although I don't know if many recruiters will have heard of Baylor as it's not Ivy League, Stanford, etc.) I think going abroad for a year will give you an advantage over other people from Middlesex (& similar "level" universities) but as smitchinson has already pointed out, you'll be competing against students from target universities, so again, whilst not impossible, it will be difficult. Best of luck though.

I apologise, I meant to say "It is far from".

It's not far from a target university which will make it far more difficult for you to land a job in banking, though nothing is impossible and therefore if you have the real drive and determination to do what is needed you may make it. Getting that 2.1 to a 1.1 would be a small step in the right direction... good luck.
