As Vicki said IBD and M&A are usually one and the same program. None of these programs are easy to get into, but if I were forced to rank in terms of competitiveness, standards, odds of getting in etc., and this is my personal opinion, I would rank as follows, not coincidentally, in terms of brutality of hours, similar ranking too: 1. IBD/M&A 2. Research 3. Sales and Trading 4. Quant research 5. Asset Management 6. Wealth Management

IBD and M&A are usually the same graduate programme as most programmes are generalist and graduates are hired for the division (not the desks within it). Sales, Trading and Research are also often grouped together, however some firms hire still grads separately for debt and equity markets. Asset/fund Management is usually grouped as an area too unless you are applying specifically to a fund manager such as Henderson. Historically the largest intake of graduates is in corporate finance and sales and trading. Asset managers and research departments take a handful of grads each year. They are all difficult to get into especially in today’s markets. You will need to select the area that YOU are interested in and where you feel you will do well. You need to read the careers sites and understand what skills are required and then match your skills the role that suits you best. Graduates who apply for several areas tend to be less successful than focused graduates who have chosen an area and research it fully.
