Graduating in June 2009 without any financial experience. Should I apply for internship or graduate scheme?

The title says it all. I was told that you'll need some financial experience to get into the graduate scheme. Without summer internship in my penultimate year, is it still possible? Should I apply for summer internship instead, even though I'm graduating in June 2009? I'm really confused now.. what should I apply for?? Thanks for the advice. Asked by Kyle00, 97 days ago

Thanks Vicky C. I spent most of my holidays travelling around the Europe. By the time I wanted to do the application, most of them have already passed the deadline. I did however, passed the online test of BNP Paribas. But the HR replied that internship offers have been fully taken, and that I can only go for full internship (i.e 12 months internship), which I can't since I still have a final year to go. I thought of doing like what you said, apply to both. But most companies only allow one application per person, which gives me a headache to choose what to apply. I was told that top companies hardly recruit anyone into grad scheme without any financial experience; and they also don't offer interships for final year. I'm thinking, perhaps application to Asia (like Singapore) would increase my chances, would it?? By the way, I'm interested in FICC/trading desk. I know it is highly competitive given the current market condition. Would investment management be slightly less competitive? Or do you think I should go for MO like Credit Risk Management and Advisory?? Thanks for the advice.

Were you unsuccessful at the summer rounds? If this is the case I would try to understand why. You may like to post more info here and I can try to help you work this out. To have had a good crack at securing a summer internship, you should have completed around 15 applications for the same type of role. I suggest this as this means that you will have researched all the opportunities available to you and chosen which type of role suits you best. You will understand the industry as well as something unique about each company you applied to. If you were invited to interview but rejected, you need to work out why. Likewise, if your applications did not attract the recruiter to invite you, you need to work out why. To briefly answer your question, id apply for both programmes in the Fall. If you get invited for an internship interview, then you need to have a plan of what you will do for the gap year - a Masters is the obvious choice.
