What sort of response do you want to this question ? Rather than spark a flame war, here are a few facts from our database. (I'm an odd headhunter, I've done SQL for 20 years). The % of women choosing to be a quant is lower than the % in "feeder" subjects (maths, CS, physics, engineering). If I include economics then the effect is even more clear. The % of women dramatically with ethnic group, Chinese being the closest, just ahead of Latin Americans, Russians do not do badly. British and Americans produce the highest disparity, and amongst European countries there is definitely trends for each one. Amongst experienced quants, it is hard to explain what I see. The drop out rate appears to be much higher for women than men, and the % studying MFEs and the CQF is higher than the number actually doing it by a considerable margin. The sexist explanation is women leaving to have babies, but it does not seem plausible. A MFE or CQF is non trivial money, a finance masters can cost $60,000, plus a year's lost pay. We'd have to assume many women wasting serious money and time, which is unlikely to explain much of the data. I understand some of the mechanisms but lack the space.
